FROSTED: Make Your Labor Day Weekend Bright With A Little Bit Of Orange and White!

As the summer slowly draws to an end and we all try to fight the lingering heat; we find ourselves reaching for those boxes of popsicles at the supermarket. How could we resist the sweet savory taste of an orange Creamsicle? Yum!

So why not share the same orange creamy flavor that we love, but without the syrupy sticky mess of a popsicle? Now you can, with a variety of different orange creamsicle desserts and drinks that have become all of the rage this summer. This fruity flavor adds a light refreshing taste that would be a perfect compliment to any Labor Day barbeque, end of summer luau party, or as a game day party sweet for those orange and white football fans (Go TN Vols)!

So leave the popsicles in the freezer, and try a little slice of these fruity treats...

Ingredients:
(Makes around 8 cups)
  • 8 cups of Rice Chex Cereal
  • 1 1/2 cups of white vanilla baking chips
  • 1/4 cup of butter
  • 3 Tablespoons of heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons of orange zest (this is the zest of about 1 1/2 oranges)
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract
  • 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar
Directions:

1.  Measure 8 cups of Rice Chex Cereal into a very large mixing bowl, set aside. In a microwave safe mixing bowl, combine vanilla baking chips, butter, cream, and orange zest.

2.  Microwave mixture on 50% power in 30 seconds intervals, stirring with a fork after each interval, until melted and smooth. Stir in orange extract. Pour mixture over Rice Chex Cereal and gently toss mixture with a rubber spatula until evenly coated.

3.   Pour coated cereal into a two gallon ziploc bag, add the powdered sugar, and seal bag. Shake mixture until evenly coated with powdered sugar.

For a crispier version: preheat oven to 275 degrees. Divide prepared orange creamsicle buddies in an even layer among two cookie sheets and bake 20 minutes, stirring once halfway through. Allow to cool and store mixture in an airtight container.

Swirled Creamsicle Meringues
(Recipe by Butter Me Up, Brooklyn)

Ingredients:
(Makes approximately 2 dozen)
  • 3 egg whites, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • Half a vanilla bean, seeds scraped
  • Large pinch of salt
  • Large pinch of cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon of orange zest
Directions:

1.  Preheat oven to 200 degrees and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Combine egg whites, sugar, and vanilla bean in a medium heatproof bowl, then set the bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water for 3 minutes. Stir the mixture occasionally to make sure the sugar is dissolved.

2.  Carefully remove the bowl and add salt and cream of tartar. Beat on high for 7 minutes, until soft, glossy peaks form and the mixture has slightly cooled. Add the orange zest and beat until combined.

3.  Using a small clean paintbrush, paint three stripes of food coloring on the inside of a pastry bag fitted with a 1/2-inch round tip. Dab a tiny bit of the meringue on each corner of the baking sheet to make sure that the parchment paper stays in place when you are forming your little cookies.

4.  Fill the bag with meringue and pipe small swirls on the baking sheet. Bake for one hour and 15 minutes or until the outside of the cookies are crisp. Let cool for several minutes on the baking sheet then transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Bonus Tutorial: DIY Halloween Party Blowers...Wahoo!!

Summer is coming to a close and it is time to celebrate!!  And what better way than to get all set for Halloween with these fantastic & fun vintage-style party blowers!

DIY Vintage Party Blowers

Supplies You Will Need:

~ Straws (our fabulous striped ones were purchased at Michael's for $1.99-cut them in half so they are about 4" each)
~ Decorative Paper (size 12" by 12")  (Each sheet of paper yields six party blowers)  If you plan on doing a lot of blowing, make sure to use a thinner paper (wrapping paper would work well here:)
~ Clear Scotch Tape
~ Glue (optional)
~ Rubber Bands
~ Pencil
~ Decorative Ribbon

1.) Start with 12 x 12 sheets of scrapbook paper from a local craft store like Michael's in your party's colors.  Cut the paper into 2" x  10" strips from each sheet.

2.) Fold the paper in thirds by folding towards the middle and then adhere both folded sides down along the top edge of the fold with a long strip of scotch tape.  (Fold each strip twice so that the two long sides meet in the middle and make sure your piece of tape goes over the seam completely to seal it up.)  Make sure that your tape completely covers the folds...you don't want any air to escape when it comes time to blow them!

3.) Fold down one end of your long strip of decorative paper, about 1/4 inch or so to close the end on one side.  I fastened mine shut with a small piece of tape.

4.) Roll the end around a pencil (make sure to start with the closed end that you just adhered shut) and twist until your paper is all the way rolled up.

5.) Fasten your roll with a rubber band, slide it off of the pencil (it is easiest to remove it from the sharpened side), and let your rolls sit overnight.

6.) Take your rubber band off and insert one end of your 4" straw into the open end of the rolled tube of paper.  You can use glue if you prefer a cleaner edge, but I used more scotch tape (you can cover it with pretty ribbon later).  Fold in the corners of the open end of the paper roll on either side and secure with tape.

7.) Tie a strip of pretty ribbon over the tape to cover it and snip the edges for a clean look.

And there you have it...you are all set!

The perfect little craft to do with the kiddos, festive cupcake toppers, Halloween party decorations, or just the right tools to make a fabulous wreath for the front door!  With all of this fun to be had, I don't think we will be missing summer one little bit! Photobucket

Juneberry Baby: The Mother's Necklace: A New Crop of Fabulous!

Well, as the months turn into weeks and I grow closer and closer to adding another little bird to my almost-all-organized nest, I thought today would be a great day to highlight a few of my favorite Etsy jewelry makers and the gorgeous 'mother's necklaces' that have replaced the standard, mall chain jewelry store varieties!

This generation is a lucky crop of mamas, I tell you, because there are just too many styles out there to choose from and you can go as casual and fab as you like, without compromising your style.  And who says you have to wait until Mother's Day for one of these pretty little suckers?  For prices like these, one of these handmade beauties can be all yours just for having a particularly challenging day with naps & temper tantrums, don't you think?

Take a look . . .

($32 from Beazuness)

Aren't those just the sweetest things?  Now please don't forget to write down the name of the seller you purchase your fancy bauble from, so that when baby #2 or #3 or even four & beyond (if you are completely out of your mind:) rolls around, you can easily add to your collection!  Have a wonderful day!
